AR Date Extended and Other Tidbits

Accelerated Reader Date Extended for Third Quarter

Because of the 4 days missed due to the big Ice Storm 2009, I will extend the date for the students to make their Accelerated Reader goal until March 12th. The quarter will actually end on March 6th. An adjustment will be made to their 4th quarter goal because of this extension. I really cannot believe that it is almost 4th quarter! Where has the year gone?

Valentine's Day

Thank you to all the students who brought me valentines, cookies, cupcakes, suckers, and candy. It made my day very special and all of you are very special to me. I hope everyone enjoyed their Valentine's Day as much as I did.

Show-Me Award Nominees

During library time with your child, I am reading the ten books which have been nominated to receive the Show-Me Reader Award. This is an award given by the students and librarians in the state of Missouri. Your child will be ask to vote on the one book which was their favorite. After I have counted all the votes, I will submit our votes to Jefferson City, along with other librarians in the state who are participating in this event. All votes will be counted and the winner will be announced at the Missouri State Librarian's Conference in April. It is always exciting to see if our school picked the winner.

Mark Twain Award Nominees

Students in grades 4-6 have been ask to read the books which have been nominated for the Mark Twain Award. This is also an award given by the students and librarians in the state of Missouri. In order to be able to vote, each student has to have read at least four of the twelve books that have been nominated. Voting will take place before March 6th. Votes will be submitted to Jefferson City and the winner is also announced at the Missouri State Librarian's Conference in April.

If a student reads at least 5 Mark Twain Nominees from the current list and took an AR test on it scoring 80% or above, they will be invited to a pizza party for going above and beyond the 4 books required to vote. Hopefully this party will take place on March 6th.

Sorry it has been so long since I last posted. I hope that everyone had a great Christmas! I know I did. Plus I am hoping that everyone has a great new year! It has been a busy start to a new semester, with setting new AR goals and hosting the AR store for the 2nd time this year. Things are off to a great start.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sold items for our library fund raiser and those who bought items also. The students did a fantastic job and raised a little over $4,500.00. I am so proud of them. I will use the money to add many new books to the library and fund the Accelerated Reader program. Thanks to all for your support of the library and the AR reading program.

VOTE FOR BOOKS!

This past Tuesday, as our country was voting for a new president and other elected officials, here in the elementary, we were voting for our favorite book. We began with a very long list and narrowed it down "in the primary" to 2 choices for the K-2 students and the 3rd - 5th graders. The lower elementary choose the book Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems and The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. In the lower grades, 147 students voted and the winner was The Polar Express. The upper grades cast 148 voted for either The Million Dollar Putt by Dan Gutman or The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan and the winner was The Million Dollar Putt. I really was not surprised that this book won because I have 5 copies and there is never one on the shelf. I hope to do this annually. I feel like many of the students enjoyed this experience. For some time I have been wanting to get our Accelerated Reading Quiz list on the web site. I know that many of you have books at home that you have bought for your children or you may take them to a public library. So finally, here is link for you to click at access the quizzes that Bloomfield Schools have in our system. Please note that the quizzes are for K-12.

Library Fundraiser!
Starting November 4th until November 24th, Kindergarten - fifth grades will be taking home a catalog and ask to help raise money for the elementary library needs. We have many books that are old and need to be replaced. Teachers are asked by the librarian from time to time to suggest books and DVDs or Videos that they would find beneficial to their teaching. The money that was raised with our fund raiser, which was 3 or 4, years ago has added books, dvds, videos and help fund the Accelerated Reader program with items for the AR store and the end of the year trip.

I had used Uncle Jerry's Tees for the first fund raiser I had ever done and it has been by far the best. The catalog has many items that would make excellent Christmas presents. Samples of a few of the items may be seen at the elementary library. Once the order is submitted, it will be returned to us in 10 days.

You can go to Uncle Jerry's website and download extra order blanks should you need them or send a request with your child. I have many more forms in the library that are available at any time. You may also send the website to family and friends who live away from here and they can see the items and then place an order with you.

Remember, do NOT sell to strangers, only sell to family and friends. Plus make sure that the order form is completely filled out and don't forget to collect the money when taking the order.

In advance, I would like to thank everyone for your participation! Reading is so important and my goal is to provide our children with high interest books to help them learn to love reading!
